Simon the Cellarer Character Jug Royal Doulton
$21.00
The name of this character jug by Royal Doulton is Simon the Cellarer, and it is incised on his back. He was a wine taster immortalized in a 19th century drinking song. He held the keys to the wine cellar, which make up the handle of this jug. He was modelled by Charles J. Noke, and was produced from 1936-60. This jug bears the A mark on the back stamp, which further dates its production from 1939-55. It measures 4″ wide, is 2 1/2″ deep and stands 3 1/2″ tall, categorizing it as a small size. Two other sizes were made-a 6 1/2″ size and a 1 1/2″ size. It is unboxed, and has some crazing on the bottom, but no chips, cracks or repairs.
